LOOK GOOD / FEEL GOOD / DO GOOD with GOOD PROTEIN (or not idc)
it’s a simple question, really…
Why have bad protein when you could have GOOD PROTEIN?
Navigating the world of protein powders can be a bit overwhelming, especially when you have specific health and fitness goals like mine. I’ve tried quite a few, but Good Protein stands out for so many reasons. Here’s a breakdown on protein in general and why this fava bean-based protein powder is my go-to and why it might be perfect for you too. If you wanna try it out (and adjust your subscription at any time like me) feel free to use my code paige764 for 25% off your first order. I use the subscribe and save feature (she loves a buck) but it’s super easy to log in and change it to be once every x months or whatever you realistically will use.
Brotein vs Protein
So to start, what issssssss protein? Essentially, (ha), it’s a fundamental building block of our bodies, composed of amino acids. There are essential amino acids, which we must obtain from our diet, and non-essential amino acids, which our bodies can synthesize. The essential amino acids include:
Histidine
Isoleucine
Leucine
Lysine
Methionine
Phenylalanine
Threonine
Tryptophan
Valine
Our bodies can create non-essential amino acids from these essential ones through various biochemical processes, utilizing combinations of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms. It's easy to be sold on the idea that we’re not getting enough protein and that we need more to avoid being a skinny-fat incel loser that no one will ever associate with or deem worthy of existence… but the truth is most of us are getting plenty :)
All plants (yes even tomatoes… grass… bananas) contain ALL the essential macronutrients: carbs, [essential] protein, and fats. Your body can make the non-essential amino acids, so protein powders are really about convenience and meeting specific goals. Don’t get fooled – stay informed.
The Power of Fava Beans
Fava beans are a fantastic source of plant-based protein with a unique set of benefits:
Rich in Protein and Fiber: Fava beans provide a substantial amount of protein and dietary fiber, which helps keep you full and supports digestive health.
High in Iron: They are an excellent source of iron, which is crucial for preventing anemia and maintaining energy levels. Plant-based iron is absorbed more effectively when paired with vitamin C, which is also found in fava beans.
Folate Content: Fava beans are packed with folate, a B-vitamin essential for DNA synthesis and repair, making them especially beneficial for pregnant women.
Magnesium and Potassium: These minerals in fava beans help maintain healthy blood pressure and support muscle and nerve function.
L-dopa: Fava beans naturally contain L-dopa, a precursor to dopamine, which can help improve mood and cognitive function.
Nutritional Pitfalls of Dairy Protein
Switching to plant-based proteins isn’t just about nutrition; it’s also an ethical and environmental choice. Here’s a closer look at why dairy proteins fall short:
Casein Protein and Cancer: Casein, a major protein in dairy, has been linked to cancer in several scientific studies. Research suggests that casein may promote cancer cell growth, particularly in prostate cancer. In a study following over 100,000 men and women, higher milk consumption was associated with increased risks of bone fractures, heart disease, and certain cancers, including prostate cancer.
IGF-1 in Cow's Milk: Cow's milk naturally contains Insulin-like Growth Factor 1 (IGF-1), a hormone meant to help baby cows grow. However, when humans consume cow's milk, the elevated levels of IGF-1 can promote cancer cell growth and have been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers. The consumption of dairy boosts the levels of this growth hormone, which is not ideal for adults as it can promote cancerous growths
Hormones and Antibiotics: Dairy products often contain residual hormones and antibiotics used in animal farming, which can disrupt our hormonal balance and contribute to antibiotic resistance.
Lactose Intolerance: A significant portion of the population is lactose intolerant, making dairy proteins difficult to digest and causing discomfort. You’re not lactose intolerant, you’re just not a baby cow.
Inflammation: Dairy proteins can promote inflammation in some individuals, potentially exacerbating conditions like acne and arthritis. As soon as I went vegan, my acne improved tenfold and finally got me off the endless cycle of Accutane (5 rounds and counting!).
Ethical Concerns with Dairy Production
Dairy farming raises significant ethical issues:
Sexual Assault of Cows: The process of impregnating cows, often referred to as "rape racks," involves forcibly inseminating cows to keep them in a constant state of pregnancy and lactation. This practice is invasive and stressful for the animals.
Separation from Calves: After birth, calves are usually separated from their mothers within hours, causing immense distress to both. The female calves are often raised to become milk producers, continuing the cycle of exploitation, while male calves are typically slaughtered for veal.
End-of-Life Slaughter: Dairy cows, once their milk production declines, are usually sent to slaughterhouses. The entire process of dairy farming contributes to immense animal suffering.
By choosing Good Protein, you’re supporting a fully vegan company that aligns with the values of compassion and sustainability. Plus, we have plenty of agricultural land in Canada for growing fava beans, which helps combat global warming by reducing the need for dairy fodder and the resources required to maintain dairy cows.
Debunking the Protein Myth
I was super skeptical at first because I know adding protein isn't always necessary for my goals. But honestly, incorporating Good Protein made me feel better overall. I noticed improvements in hair growth and skin glow, and it helps keep me more satiated throughout the day. Sometimes I struggle with getting enough protein and eating enough in general, so having a quick, reliable source of protein like this is a game-changer. I know I get ‘enough’ protein through my high-raw, plant-based vegan diet, but this supplement gives me the peace of mind and better progress toward my specific fitness goals. That and it keeps my trainer off my ass.
Taste and Versatility
Let’s be honest, a lot of vegan protein powders taste chalky and leave much to be desired. Not Good Protein. Their flavors are incredible:
Vanilla and Cookies n’ Creme: So good on its own or with frozen bananas. I keep it low-fat with just water but you could use plant mylk, too.
Mocha and Peanut Butter: Delicious in coffee, nice cream in the Blendtec, raw ballzzzzz, or regular schmegular heated baking.
Acai and Strawberry: Fantastic in acai bowls or strawberry on its own or in yogurt.
They even offer seasonal flavors like pumpkin spice, gingerbread, and mini eggs for Easter – I stocked up on those because they were a huge hit. Good Protein also has a variety of sweetness levels, including an unflavoured option for those who are psychopaths who prefer boring things.
Easy Integration into Your Routine
Good Protein is incredibly easy to integrate into your daily routine. Whether you’re blending it into a smoothie, mixing it into your coffee, or baking with it, it blends smoothly without any chalky texture. For the best results, I recommend using a Blendtec (link to that blog coming soon). It’s also amazing for making raw protein balls and other healthy snacks.
Here are some of my favorite recipes using Good Protein:
Frozen Blueberries with Banana and Protein Powder Mash
Yogurt and Protein Mix – I recommend Canadian brands Riviera and Yoso for their amazing oat yogurts. Riviera has a high-protein Greek option, though the company isn’t fully vegan. Yoso also makes great yogurt that pairs perfectly with protein powder.
Iced Coffee and Boba Teas - mixes great and drinkable on the go with the boba-coffee cup and collapsable straw I use, in the Shop
Convenient and Customizable
Good Protein’s subscription service makes it easy to keep your pantry stocked. You can easily switch up the date and items in your schedule, ensuring you never run out of your favorite flavors. Their seasonal products keep things exciting, and the fact that they are continuously improving and expanding their range is a testament to their commitment to quality and innovation.
